We're delighted to welcome StudyPerth, Australia to our community as a Non-Executive Member.
“StudyPerth is committed to supporting a positive student experience for all international students and this includes ensuring that students have access to quality accommodation throughout their education journey in Western Australia. Being a member of the Student Accommodation Association allows us to network with industry professionals who share the same commitment, engage in meaningful discussions, and collaborate on initiatives that enhance the overall wellbeing and educational experience of students. In addition to this, WA is eager to attract investment in purpose-built student accommodation. As a member of the representative body for quality student accommodation providers, we have the chance to forge connections and highlight the opportunities available here in Perth.” said Derryn Belford, StudyPerth’s CEO.
StudyPerth is the peak body for international education in Western Australia and counts as its members all of the universities and the majority of vocational and English language colleges in the State. StudyPerth’s vision is for Perth to be recognised as the international education destination of choice, which is achieved by institutions offering students a stimulating education and training experience, alongside an enviable lifestyle in a safe location and enhanced employment and migration opportunities.
We look forward to working together on enhancing student experience!
The Student Accommodation Association is delighted to have begun to ramp our face to face activities for members.
Our inaugural industry drinks in Perth last month was followed by a similar event in Adelaide last Friday evening at Yugo Adelaide City. The event brought together associates from member organisations with operating interests in South Australia to enjoy each other's company and share experiences.
Thank you to StudyAdelaide for sponsoring the event and to StarRez, Inc. and Constant Security Services, our wonderful corporate sponsors, for flying representatives in from interstate to mingle with the SAA community. Thanks also goes to Shane Souter, Karen Goodall, Jodie McDonald, SAA HQ and Rebecca Bendall for organising such an enjoyable evening.
SAA is planning events to be held in Melbourne and Brisbane before the end of the year. Please contact SAA HQ if you are interested in presenting to the SAA community or wish to sponsor.
We are proud to announce that the University of the Sunshine Coast has joined SAA as an executive member. Our community is delighted to have them on board.
"UniSC is committed to ensuring our students have a high-quality university experience. Becoming a member of the Student Accommodation Association (SAA) enables us to ensure students have access to information on quality accommodation which is provided for the exclusive use of students to support and enhance the Australian education experience. The work of SAA enables students to have confidence in finding suitable, safe and comfortable accommodation near our campuses." said Alex Elibank Murray, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Global & Engagement).
The inaugural SAA WA Regional Subcommittee Industry Networking Event took place last Thursday, 11 May 2023, at Yugo office in Perth.
With more than 30 people in attendance, the event was a great success, providing a unique opportunity for local industry professionals to connect and hear valuable insights about the state of the student accommodation sector in Western Australia.
The guest speakers' presentations were informative and sparked interesting discussions among the attendees. Derryn Belford, the Chief Executive Officer of StudyPerth, kicked off the event with an engaging talk, providing attendees with valuable insights into the current state and prospects of student accommodation in Perth. David Cresp, Director at Urbis, followed, offering his expertise and discussing the latest research reports and findings in the sector. Finally, Kristen Anderson, the Place & Business Development Coordinator at the City of Perth, shared valuable perspectives on student accommodation development and its impact on the city.
Thank you to all the attendees, guest speakers, and supporters who made this event possible. Special thank you to Yugo for the venue and invaluable support in organising the event and StudyPerth, Australia for their contribution and partnership.
Keep an eye out for future events and initiatives as the subcommittee continues to drive progress and facilitate collaboration within the industry.
A warm welcome to our new Non-Executive Member, Belong! The SAA National Committee are thrilled to have you join our community and look forward to working together.
"Here at Belong, we are all very excited to be part of the SAA community and we are looking forward to enhancing networks, share experiences and best practices in order to provide the best service possible to all our students," said Betzy Olivier, Property Manager at Belong.
Founded in Sydney by a diverse team of former international students, Belong aim to help students "Live Better and Study Better”. With a focus on providing regular residential apartments to students rather than purpose-built student housing, Belong have partnered with major developers such as Meriton, Galileo, Deicorp, and Anson in Australia to provide over 500 apartments to international students seeking high-quality, affordable, convenient accommodation.
The Student Accommodation Association gave evidence to the Federal Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade's subcommittee inquiry into international tourism and education yesterday in Melbourne. It was a wonderful opportunity to update the parliamentary subcommittee on the exceptional work SAA members have undertaken in developing a robust set of industry-led minimum standards and implementing the National Property Accreditation Scheme (NPAS) stamp of quality. NPAS provides Australian international education stakeholders with the confidence to identify and promote NPAS-accredited providers to international students in a clear, coherent, and consistent manner. NPAS stands to be the prerequisite requirement for inclusion or representation in student material provided by education providers and government agencies. NPAS assists to define student accommodation (where students are treated as customers) over other accommodation where they must be prepared to act as tenants – helping them to make an informed accommodation choice and reducing the risk of finding themselves in unregulated, below standard, rental accommodation. SAA looks forward to continuing to work with local, state and federal government to gain the endorsement of NPAS properties which will further assist international students and their parents when making the critical decision about accommodation when moving to Australia. For more information on NPAS accredited properties please visit our website.
SAA is pleased to announce that a lot of interest was generated nationally for the formation of SAA regional sub-committees in each state.
Over 20 members attended SAA Regional Sub-Committee online meetings across most states and territories last month.
Discussions were held around what activities will be planned in each state to ensure members can connect and discuss local industry matters specific to their region so they can be elevated to the SAA national agenda.
The formation of SAA regional groups is a positive way of enabling member companies, organisations and institutions to get local staff involved in SAA.
The first regional face-to-face meetings are being planned, with the first meeting in Perth at the end of April. Stay tuned for future updates.
What a great turnout and successful event at the SAA Networking Lunch in Sydney yesterday! More than 75 student accommodation operators and key government decision makers met in the NSW Parliament House for an update on how this multi-billion dollar sector is recovering. Thank you so much to all the guests and speakers Paul Savitz, Karla Lampe, Toshi Kawaguchi, Helen Kronberger, Heather Kettle, and Rebecca Hall GAICD for your time and invaluable contribution. Thank you to Denise von Wald, FAICD and David Riordan for moderating the event. The key insights of the event will be published soon, stay tuned! Finally, a big shout-out to all of our sponsors and partners - without you, the event wouldn't have been a success! Study NSW, Savills Australia & New Zealand, StarRez, Inc., and Constant Security Services
